  • The fish, which has a light reddish-white body and fins, was discovered from Naihati, West Bengal.
  • This can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its high and strongly compressed body, tiny barbels, and anal fin with six branched rays.
  • The researchers from Kerala and West Bengal have identified the edible fish species in West Bengal. 
  • It has a thin and compressed body and can be cultured in inland water bodies.
  • The discovery of the fish has been published in the Journal of Experimental Zoology.
